Thank you so much, Pam! I wasn’t sure about the writing, need to practice that – it’s much more difficult than it appears. Wasn’t planning to add colour to the graphite parts. Do you think I should? I also considered doing a graphite version of the whole tree somewhere but now there is no more space…

Hi Lee- you are off to a good start! The colors seem good! What is missing for me is the texture. In Botanical Basics Wendy demonstrates drawing a feather on Lesson 22. That would be a good reference in capturing the texture. The cast shadow is a little too dark. I would also expect the edge of the cast shadow to follow the irregular edge of the feather.

Doug, This is my work on lesson 22. This is not a juried art show, it is something I do to relax. If I will be subjected to extreme criticism on every download, I will cancel my subscription.

Your color matching is wonderful, Elizabeth! Doug’s suggestions are perfect. I also wonder whether your colored pencils are sharp enough. Try keeping your colored pencils really sharp, and build your layers very lightly and slowly. This will help get nice even tone, and gradual gradations.

Deborah, nice drawing of this branch. I like how you observing some of the little knobs and imperfections on it. You are starting to get some good 3D form, with that highlight toward the left side of the branch, and then getting darker on the right. Very good! From the placement of the highlight, it looks like your light is coming from the upper…[Read more]

This is beautiful! You captured the essence of this scene perfectly. I feel like I can even smell the air. The only thing I would suggest is to carry the blue sky over to right a bit. Also, there is a skinny white rectangle on the lower left. I’m guessing you are going to paint something there? This is such a gorgeous painting. I just love it, and…[Read more]

Renata, This is fantastic! Your addition of the petals showing how the stamen are attached is the perfect way to balance out the composition. Wonderful choice! And it give us great information about the structure of the flower, and adds wonderful interest. You captured the shine of the petals beautifully. The text is great. I really like how you…[Read more]

This is wonderful. One of my favorites of yours. I love that Wendy commented that it feels like its moving under the water, and then we found out that that was your goal! The addition of those shells are great. I love how the different elements interact with one another. Bravo!!!!

I love the additions to this composition! It helps to balance it out, and helps the eye move around the page. And I like how you have that fruit in the upper right pointing to the focal point. It’s such a lovely drawing.

Oh Deborah, these are great! And it looks like you are lighting them correctly from the upper left. Yay! I am especially impressed with your toning on the mulberry leaf. It looks nice and smooth, and you are getting nice 3D form. You may want to narrow up those secondary veins a bit. They seem a bit too wide. On the lower right side of that leaf,…[Read more]

Sharon, this is a really good start to getting that center area. It already feels like echinacea to me. Now think about the 3D form of that flower head, and shade that center area sort of like a sphere. If the light is coming from the upper right, you would get dark on the bottom left of that center, and leave a highlight where in the upper right…[Read more]

(When I said “flower head” I meant that center tuft of little tiny flowers that makes up that round shape in the center)

Hi Elizabeth- you are off to a good start! Some things to consider – the top highlight needs to shift over to the left a little. I see ribbing on the subject and I would expect the highlights to be more rectangular than roundish. The bottom green section is missing the range of tones that would give it form. The left edge is too dark so that…[Read more]
