He’s so cute!!! Maybe add a little toning on the bottom, and lighten it up a bit where the highlight would be to give him a rounder puffier form. I think it will look great with the knapweed!

Oooooh yes! Your main form shadow is much softer and gradual in this pear compared to your first one. Awesome!! You could get a little darker on the bottom right of the pear to show how the form curves away from the light down there. And then you could also add just a very light bit of tone to the left side of the pear, and gradually blend it…[Read more]

Haha. Now I’m seeing the winking eye, and the blemish on the bottom right looks like a little smirky smile 🙂 I like how you are showing the 3 dimensional form by rendering the pear lighter on the left, and then getting darkest on the right. Good job! Sometimes when we light a subject, especially if the light is very close to the subject, we can…[Read more]

Cibyl, You have such a beautiful style to your drawings. They are very dynamic. I really like those stamen details in this drawing. And I like that you are getting nice contrast. One area that I think you could work on is those larger shadow shapes. Right now they are all one value. You want to study way the light is hitting the form while you are…[Read more]

Nice job Elinor! The colors are great! I see highlights and a range of tones on the golden petals, but they are not apparent to me on the green leaves. I would expect to see shadows on the bottom leaf where a leaf crosses over it and probably where the leaves bend and meet the stem, etc.. Don’t forget highlights too! Even though stems are narrow i…[Read more]

Nice, Elinor. Such a tough subject. You did a good job with all of those overlaps on those yellow flower branches. Yellows are really hard, and I think your shadow colors are successful. I would just echo Doug’s advice. Good job!

Hi Karen- beautiful colors! At the top where we see a glimpse of the front of the flower folding over and casting a shadow I can start to see some form, but I am missing highlights and a range of tones on the rest of the flower and stem. It is so easy to get excited about and get caught up in the colors and details and we get away from…[Read more]

I love that you did drew this on both kraft paper and white paper. You are committed! I’m impressed. Really nice drawing, and I love how white those petals look on the craft paper. Great!

Beautiful colors and shine, Cathy. I can “feel” that papery skin.

Hi Cathie- great strong, rich colors! I am having a hard time figuring which direction your light is coming from. The highlights seemed to be centered on each petal and the stem and leaf don’t have a fully formed highlight or range of tones. It is important to establish that base so that the illustration of the subject is as realistic as p…[Read more]

It was a strange shaped pear….that one blemish toward the top on the left keeps looking like a winking eye to me. LOL
