Great drawing, Leslie. I really like the mix of the grayscale with the bright greens. Now imagine your light source coming from the upper left, and try to make that avocado look a bit more 3 D by toning it darker on right side and bottom. It’s really a beautiful drawing. I love the details on the stem and peduncle!

Really beautiful drawing. I love the colors. The texture of that lemon is very nice, and I love how you are showing the cut ope section of the lemon. That flower is my favorite part of this drawing. I LOVE how dark you got at the base of those reproductive parts – it really shows how those stamen and pistil are attached deep down in there. There…[Read more]

Lovely little flower, and adorable leaves. Good attention to the stem and peduncles – nice and carefully drawn – those skinny guys are hard.

Try to look at this as if it wasn’t your drawing. I think if you could do that, you would like it as much as we do. I think it’s great!

Great page, Erin! I love how you are studying all of those different elements. You did a nice job of showing those individual stamen – not an easy task!. I especially like that flower in the middle of the page, and how you are using darker value to show how the place where the stamen attach at the center receeds. You can really see it dipping…[Read more]

Yes, very nice toning, Zara, and lovely drawing. Katy had great suggestions. One thing to try to keep in mind is that the right side is not going to have as much light hitting it as the left side (if you are lighting your object from the upper left). So that right side will always be darker than the left side. Right now, the left and right edges…[Read more]

I just LOVE that highlight.

Nice, Dora! One small suggestion for future drawings. In general, it’s good to try to avoid having different elements just barely touch one another, like the leaves that are just touching the berries. One option could be to have them overlap instead. Or you could be sure to leave a larger gap between them. Just something to consider in future drawings π

Dora, this is such a beautiful drawing. I love the saturated colors. I especially like the petioles. Really nicely drawn.

Maureen, What a fun subject, and a beautifully designed composition. I really like the bright colors of the carrots with the grayscale images, and your lettering is beautiful. And what a fun subject!

Rita, this is so nice. I love all the textures. Were you doing this as texture study? Great page.

I love the beautiful colors you got on these grapes. They also have a lovely translucent feel. Nice!

Really fun. Only one suggestion. That center tip of the leaf is just almost touching the bark, causing some tension there. It can some times be better to leave a larger space between objects, or make an obvious overlap. Just something to think about in the future π

Really sweet! And I love Katy’s suggestion of having the bird look up. Or, you could consider adding a bird flyng from the lower right branch toward that first big bird on the upper branch.

Ishbel, I know we talked about this in the webinar, but I wanted to also mention how much I like this composition. The angles of the stem look so natural. The curves of your lines are beautiful, and I love the way they move the eye around the page. And the positioning of that dark bud along with the curve of that leaf under it lead the eye right…[Read more]

Those stripey berries are tough to show light source, especially when the darker parts are on the lighter part of the form. Again, I think you are getting it. I can feel the form. You are doing what I would suggest, it to just exaggerate those major highlights a bit, and make sure to get dark on the lower right. Nice job. And the composition is beautiful.

I really love the light sensitive feel of this. It’s lovely. I know what you mean about figuring out the light while drawing in the field. It can be tough to get the brain to imagine the light source. It’s something that definitely gets easier with practice. One thing that I sometimes do when I’m drawing in the field is try to position myself in a…[Read more]
