I really like that leaf! The veining is subtle and the cast shadows work very well. The discolorations and scars seem very integrated. I like the textures you have on the acorns, but I’d like to see you rework or add to the cast shadows. I’d also like to see you reexamine the area where the cap meets the body of the acorn, especially on the right…[Read more]

Never found a credit card while looking for mushrooms, but did find a driver’s license while rollerblading. Ashamed to say I let a friend who thought the guy’s photo was cute do the returning. Never heard what happened.

I’m with you on that deep burnishing! Eventually many of my colored pencil drawing feel like oil paintings. As with your other mushroom drawings, beautiful veining! I like that you have achieved a good tonal range without loosing the vibrancy of the color.

Yes, very nice work on the gills! And I love that were able to make a trio of mushrooms feel active and vibrant.

I am watching my Dogwood leaves change now, too. Yours are a bit more colorful. I love the little neutral buds you have observed and featured. Surprisingly, they hold their own amid the brilliant colors. I like to think of them as the “promise of spring!”

I think this is getting better. Really appreciate all the feedback! More? Less?

Yes, better! Feels more dimensional. Perhaps a bit darker shadow right on the inside edge of the shadows. Also the cast shadow of the center stem and bud could be better defined. Not necessarily darker all over, but more reflect the shape of the stem, bud, and leaf. Also on the stem that falls in front of the leaf, take the highlight down further.…[Read more]

Hi Sheila- I think this is looking better since you added some darks and the colors of the backside leaf view is looking more believable to me. This is a very striking drawing! Love the colors! I like the title and your initials as you have placed them. If you felt the need to add anything else I would combine it with either of the two areas you…[Read more]

How about an enlarged bud in the bottom left side now that the date is gone….that would create a nice conversation between all the buds!
-
Yes to the extra darks you added – makes it so much stronger, and I like Wendy’s suggestion.

I have a technique question. Do you draw the tomatoes, then fill in the color on the sepals? I struggle with them becoming indistinct. These have been erased and overworked in an attempt to improve, but there is such a heaviness to them.

Hi Sara, I’ve never thought about how and when I draw the sepals. I know I draw the sepals in first, then I think I start toning the sphere of the tomato. But it all kind of works hand in hand. Especially if the tomatoes are a similar hue to the sepals The sepals are generally lighter than the tomato, so they are defined by the darker color behind…[Read more]

Clarification: When I say “draw the sepals first” I don’t mean before I draw the rest of the tomato, I just mean before I start toning.
-
And, yum! BLT!
-
Also the shadow the sepals cast will help separate them.
-
Hi Sara, you should try fried green tomato with bacon, lettuce, mayo and toast. It will be yummy
-
I recall that when I was drawing tomatoes I liked to put my toning or grisaille everywhere before I started putting in colour. I think these drawings and sepals look excellent.

Ha ha ha. This happened to me with pine cones yesterday. And, I have found many credit cards while hunting acorns. I was a good citizen and called and reported/cancelled all of them.

Yes – echoing Vern – so sculptural and alive. Great texture. wow 8″! We were supposed to get snow today, but nope, just usual rain.

Yes, stunning, triumphant trio. 🙂 And fun with moss. They look like they could be singing together.

@vern It was fun to return to white stonehenge paper again, I enjoyed being able to deeply burnish and get that painterly feel with the pencils. Very cold and 8 inches of snow here over the weekend so am happy to be cozy inside with several projects on the go!
