This is beautiful Susan! There are a couple of areas where the petals meet and where the stem meets the flower that I would go in and add some more dark toning. The dark center is very effective and really draws your eye in. Great job!

Great job Pam! The stem looks great and you did a really nice job capturing the different textures on the catkins.

Hi Rita- thanks for sending the picture! When I look at the photo the leaves have a distinct blue tone to them and the pods are a yellow green. I don’t know if that is a true representation or if the picture colors are not accurate. Something to consider. I think the pods and leaves look much better now. The pods have more form and nice details. Good job!

Hi Doug- thanks so much for your comments- I found out this is called a bladder flower- I hate the name, but I can see why- I worked a little more on the leaves as well as the seed pods and think its better but I know feel like it still isn’t quite there and maybe never will be- not sure if I should keep at it or just start something else- the one…[Read more]

the branch was a dark colour but I was just aiming at getting the tones correct at this stage! thank you for your comments

Hi Diane-your branch is beautifully rendered! You have achieved nice, smooth toning with a great range of tones! My question is if this is a light or richly colored branch? If you were to add color on to this drawing the toning you have done would be sufficient, but if this is a black/white drawing and it is a richly colored branch I would expect…[Read more]

Hi Colleen- these branches look really good. The top of the branch on the left has nice crisp edges, but gets fuzzier towards the bottom. I would make the same comment on the branches as I did on the fruit and that is you are missing the range of tones. It is hard to have a 9 tone range on a thin subject, but it is possible to show a good range…[Read more]

Hi Colleen- you are off to a good start with toning these fruits. I think what they are lacking is a range of toning and this is easy to remedy. Consistently I see a small area of dark toning and then large swathes of similar mid-range and light tones. It is also evident on your red color arc exercise. Looking back at the arc toning exercise,…[Read more]
