It is great to see the daffodils starting to bloom and know Spring is on its way! Yellow/gold flowers are very tricky to do. You have to have a range of toning, but you don’t want to muddy the colors. It looks like you used Earth Green for the toning, which is a good choice you just need more of it. The right hand side of the column and the p…[Read more]

Another great subject! I love black and white artwork, but I am looking forward to seeing this in color too! Amazing attention to detail!

Nice job on this iris Pam. You captured the delicacy of this flower. Even though it is a sketch try to include the toning. You did some toning on the stem and leaf and I would encourage you to keep going and do the flower too. The more you do it the faster it will become second nature.

Doug, this is gorgeous! And what a great composition , view!

Thanks Sheila! I found out later that this is a very invasive tree. It has so many interesting parts a lot of us were inspired to draw it. They call it the Autograph tree because you can write on the leaves and when you see the trees out in public they appear to be covered in graffiti from people writing on the leaves.

this is really lovely, especially the composition

Beautiful, Doug, quite breathtaking.

Thank you, Doug for your helpful comments. The part of the stem that is attached at the top is that difficult paper -like thing. I don’t know it’s name but it is really hard to convey….at least for me. I have a second, dying daffodil half done to post. It captured my interest because the colors change so and it gets so curly!

Hi Douglass- I thought that is what it was. In the future rotate your flower a little so your view does not have the tepal line up with the stem or if you decide that view of the flower is the best than you can “fudge” your drawing so the two parts don’t line up. move the tepal

Doug, wow! Thank you! Oh, I eat way more, no snacking, but good 3 meals. We’re walking an hour a day on the balcony (35 feet, L-shaped), and yoga. But it’s not the amount of movement we were getting. Anyhow, we’re definitely on board with the safety restrictions. Hope you’re all well. See you online Monday! -

May thanks Doug for your helpful advice and the sketch showing how to tone the rose. I was a bit lost on this toning especially as it was such a light coloured rose.

Great job Dora! I was comparing the first posting of your hibiscus and this one. It is always amazing for me to see how just working on a couple of small details can really make a big difference. For composition sake I could see something in the bottom right. Maybe add a detail or even just extend the stem (of the open flower) down a little. Did…[Read more]

Hi Doug, I did think myself something there would be nice. I was wondering whether to write the botanical name of the plant there somehow?
-
That would be great too! Vern gave us a lettering lesson at the workshop and she is a master at it! She will look on line for fonts that she likes and then works it out on tracing paper. Then she transfers it to her drawing using a light box (use whatever method you prefer to transfer). She prefers to do it in graphite pencil as it is not as bold…[Read more]

Thanks Leslie. So nice to hear from you. We are well. Hope you, John and family are well. I have made one more attempt at this drawing following Doug’s advice on the shadow which I will post. Really enjoying coloured pencils and Wendy’s course. So appreciative to have this connection especially given the current situation.
