Pam, so great to see you in person today! Can’t wait to see what you drew/painted!

This rose is really nicely rendered. I think it might be the quality of the photo, but the left side looks faded. Some of the overlaps and where the flower meets the sepals could use more toning to enhance their form and emphasize how the flower is sitting on the sepals. Adding some details and a variety of greens to the leaves would also help.…[Read more]

Hi Bill- I don’t see the same range of tones on the branches as I see on your test arc bar. Remember you need a range of tones on each branch to emphasize their form. On the arc tone bar there is a big jump from the highlight to the tones flanking it. Those tones should be much lighter. A very white highlight usually indicates that the subject h…[Read more]

Hi Bill- good color selection and saturation on the bottom nut. I think you could go even a little darker with the toning on the bottom edge and transition into the mid-range tones you all ready have.

This drawing just gets more interesting every time I see it Mary Jo! The left edge (closest to the light source) is darker than the right edge which would be furthest from the light source. I think you could have more range in mid-tones in addition to the darks. Are all three shapes going to be the same beautiful color as the sphere?

Nice job Renata! The background leaves really help show off the white flowers. Are you planning on adding a strawberry? It would look great on the upper right side!

Hi Renata- beautiful colors with nice saturation! I like how the image is positioned on the page, but I think I would extend the right end of the stem down a little more. Right now the image is contained in a hexagonal parameter. This may or may not mean having to add another leaf or two, but your focus would still be the group of flowers. Maybe…[Read more]

This looks great, Laurie. The colours are really fun to look at. The angles might be too straight/sharp on the secondary veins, giving it a flat folded feeling.

Thanks, Sam, for the helpful feedback. Something didn’t feel right about it, but I couldn’t quite figure it out. So helpful to get your thoughts- your ‘eye’ is helping me to see!

Thank you Doug! The edge of the apple near the shadow does stand out weirdly and it looks better after I darkened the shadow. The reflected highlight is still a little scary so I might add it later.

Thanks Vern and Doug for your comments on the first 2. I tried to add more highlights to #1 but it was pretty overworked!

Thanks Doug! I like the idea of extending the stem towards the right. I was thinking of adding a fruit as well. Maybe a whole one and a section? Let me know what you think.

Hi Renata- personally, the aspect of this particular drawing that really appeals to me is it’s simplicity. Some drawings you look at and immediately see the open spaces calling out for more details. I think the way the branch has that lovely arch that you should be careful adding something and throwing off the balance. However, I am sure you c…[Read more]

Hi Renata- I just reread my first comment and it was suppose to be “horizontal parameter”. Hopefully that wasn’t too confusing! Sorry!!!! I will have to give my secretary a talking to! Ha, Ha!!!!!

Thank you Doug! I am seriously considering a strawberry! I still have the plant so I think I will wait for the strawberry to materialise instead of getting one in the grocery store. I considered also adding something to the bottom side to replicate the ground – not sure how though… Let me know if you have ideas!

Hi Renata- unlike the quince drawing, this drawing’s composition would benefit by adding more to it. I like the idea of adding a strawberry (or strawberries) and I also like your idea of illustrating the plants environment. If you are doing the ground view I think I would show how the strawberries attach to the plant rather than them being s…[Read more]

Hi Pat, Beautiful! A simple study in browns. My only comment would be that I sort of want something else on the page. It looks like this guy is talking to someone…but who?

Hi Marina, Sweet drawing. Your use of color keeps getting better and better. I really like the subtle transition of color in the reds and yellows. And the cross section is sensitively done. Just the right tinge of browns! My two comments would be the reflective light should look less like a line and more like a glow. Think of that light bouncing…[Read more]
