I’m going to let another instructor comment since we chatted in class. Great drawing with you Rita. Love your pears – especially that cut section and seeds.

I mean, you really captured the character of this plant. I’m clapping. 🙂 Looks so good on the Kat paper – that cad yellow lemon pops! The leaves are so beautifully drawn! Maybe some of them could have a fuller range of light to dark income in some places – especially on the mid tone Kraft paper? I love it. 🙂

Hi- you can definitely see the tomato has more form to it after you worked on it! You don’t need as much mid-range tone on the left side as you have done. Remember that is the side closest to your light source. The tomato on the bottom is similar to your first effort. I don’t see the range of tones that are needed to convey the round form. Ref…[Read more]

Beautiful flow, Maureen, so graceful. I’d suggest some darker greens in some leaf areas to create more drama, especially to set off against the mid tone of the Kraft paper. And maybe a bit more attention to the area where the bud sits in front of the open flower in the centre. Even though it’s close to a highlight – I think it can get a bit darker…[Read more]

Greetings! The branches are looking good! Much crisper! The arc tone bar has #9 tone (black) on the very right and the tones get lighter as you move left. With that in mind you could use more of the darker tones on the right side of your branches. The left side of your branches look good, maybe a little dark. The left edge of the branch should be…[Read more]

Awesome Rita! I think you can go darker with red violet or whatever works where the petals go behind the sepals for more drama there. Could tone down some secondary veining with some watercolour and make sure I see good highlights on the left leaf. more of a shadow behind the centre leaf on the one behind it for overlap, definitely tone down that…[Read more]

Thanks both for the feedback. I have spotted a house nearby with an apple tree, just need to pluck up the courage to ask for a few apples with stem & leaves 😊

Beautiful Sheila. Of course I am looking forward to the ripe section with seeds!I think the composition is coming along really well, keeps my eye engaged and travelling around circularly on the page.

Thank you Doug! I’ll work on those leaves – would you work in some more yellow tones? They seem a little gray. I was afraid I had oversaturated my radishes because they are super dark red. More like beets. I thought about maybe running an eraser over them to lighten them up a bit. Do they look too dark to you?

I can see that you learned a lot in this copying exercise. Good job. One composition note to learn – the branch going straight up and down will be more pleasing to the viewer if it’s at an angle, even a slight one.

Hmm, it won’t allow me to comment on your new cross section addition on the other photo so I’ll chat here. Compositionally, I might add another leaf coming diagonally in the space between the cross section and the basil leaves. I love it that you jumped right in there and added that cut section! It may have been more interesting to show me the cut…[Read more]

Hi Leslie- great composition on this page! You certainly got lots of practice on leaves! I would like to see some more variation of greens on the leaves. There are also some areas on the leaves where they meet and overlap that would benefit from some dark toning. The color saturation on the radishes is great. Because your highlight is so white and…[Read more]

Your dedication is noted Eleanor! Great studying. Always check your highlight placement – kind of in the middle of the upper left quadrant oft he sphere. Don’t get too close to the edge of the sphere. Keep working on smoothing transitions – looking really good.

This is beautiful Jane! It has the look of an antique print. I would add more dark tone on the stem to convey that the stem is coming out from underneath the flower.

Hi Jane- You have captured the muted colors of these pears and included nice details! I am confused by the highlights as they are different on all three pears. The highlight on the whole green pear is a little too far to the right and I would expect the highlight on the gold pear to be much more to the left. Also take a look at where the two…[Read more]

Hi Nancy- the quality of the photograph is not good – very dark, but from what I can see it looks like you have done a very good job color matching the petals!
